Raft Race 2018

Friends of the Narrows Community Park

Since 2019, a group of volunteers have been working in the Narrows Community Park in Hoole to develop a number of meadows and planted areas with the support of the Council - this has been much appreciated by local residents and the park has won several awards (King and Queen Consort Coronation Biodiversity Competition - CWAC - 1st Prize (2023), RHS Its your Neighbourhood Outstanding - Level 5 Award (2023) and Cheshire West Design Awards, Commended - Public Realm (2025)).
The local community have really responded positively to the changes in the park over the past 6 years; people now stop and spend time looking at the various meadows on the park, rather than simply walking through.

The annual Raft Race was held on the River Dee on Sunday, 1 July. Around 30 rafts took part, many looking appropriate to the theme – “Great Sporting Occasions”. First prize went to “Crocky Wock” provided by the Crocky Trail and second to “Dee Valley Live Wires” from SP Energy. Ladies from the Druid Inn won prizes for both the fastest ladies raft and fastest hostelry. Best themed raft was “Wembley” from 4cAccess and the most innovative was “Soft to Firm” from Old Harkers Arms.

However taking part was the main objective and the rafts made a colourful spectacle with UK Fly-board champion, Jay St. John, hovering over them whilst drenching them with water! The event raised a substantial sum for Rotary charities.
